Look forward to it
Research shows that we feel more excitement before a vacation—while imagining what we will do and who we will spend time with—than after it ends. Planning ahead and setting at least a start date gives us something to look forward to. Satisfaction after a vacation also lasts longer when the trip has been planned in advance.
Take photos
Photos and videos are powerful tools for creating memories. Photography helps us appreciate moments more deeply, and revisiting images later allows us to relive joyful experiences and enjoy pleasant nostalgia.
Accept moments as they are
Vacations are not without inconveniences—traffic jams, mosquito bites, forgotten items. Frustration may arise alongside thoughts like: “I should be happier” or “I’m not enjoying this as much as others.” Accepting moments as they are—pleasant and unpleasant alike—helps us relax. Setting realistic expectations is essential: no vacation is perfect, but many are still worth remembering fondly.
Take a break from work
Checking emails or planning future work while on vacation means we are not truly resting. Allow yourself to fully disconnect. Be present—both mentally and physically. Practicing mindfulness can help, and many helpful resources are available online.
Embrace variety
Variety enhances enjoyment. This might mean visiting multiple locations or adding diverse activities—cycling, hiking nearby hills (not in flip-flops ), or waking up early to explore a quiet city.
Tell the story
Sharing vacation experiences after returning extends enjoyment. Retelling stories helps us relive positive moments and strengthens our memories.
We wish you a pleasant, present, and joyful vacation.
