{"id":147181,"date":"2025-05-28T16:24:47","date_gmt":"2025-05-28T14:24:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pravaformula.hr\/voditelj-u-krizi-i-mentalno-zdravlje\/"},"modified":"2026-03-01T20:02:37","modified_gmt":"2026-03-01T18:02:37","slug":"leadership-in-times-of-crisis-and-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pravaformula.hr\/en\/leadership-in-times-of-crisis-and-mental-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Leadership in Times of Crisis and Mental Health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\">\u201c<span lang=\"en-US\"><i>If we want to help people quickly, we should give them a chance to catch their breath.\u201d<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><br \/>\n\u2014 Lilly Tomlin<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Does a leader\u2019s stress affect employee stress?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Research clearly shows that leaders\u2019 stress levels, leadership behaviour, and the quality of leader\u2013employee relationships significantly affect employees\u2019 mental health and wellbeing. Leader stress quite literally spills over onto employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Leadership styles characterised by <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>transformational leadership<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> contribute positively to employee wellbeing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\"><span lang=\"en-US\">A good relationship between leaders and employees generally enhances wellbeing; however, when relationships become overly close, wellbeing can decline. While this may seem surprising, the explanation is simple\u2014excessive closeness can make it harder for employees to say no and protect their personal boundaries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Which leadership style works best in a crisis?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\"><span lang=\"en-US\">This crisis has become a real test for leaders worldwide\u2014essentially a global leadership assessment centre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\"><span lang=\"en-US\">What may once have been unclear is now much more visible. Outstanding leaders have emerged, both in remote and face-to-face work environments. Even before the crisis, best practices pointed to transformational leadership as a response to emerging challenges, while situational leadership enables clear task allocation and progress tracking at both individual and team levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Combined with a clear vision and credibility, this was\u2014and remains\u2014the right leadership formula.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\"><span lang=\"en-US\">COVID-19 has changed many things, but the core dimensions of effective leadership have not changed significantly. What <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>has<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> changed is the standard of excellence required. The best leaders are also the most burdened, because they are needed the most.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\"><span lang=\"en-US\">The most successful leaders during the COVID-19 crisis are those who lead by example, inspire through a shared vision, question existing processes, involve employees, recognise contributions, and celebrate success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>What do employees expect from leaders?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Expectations of leaders are high. Research shows that employees expect leaders to demonstrate gratitude and appreciation for their efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\"><span lang=\"en-US\">They expect leaders to reinforce effective coping strategies, acknowledge individual differences in competencies and personal circumstances, and demonstrate empathy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Clarity in distinguishing what is essential from what is not, setting priorities, and making effective decisions helps avoid placing additional strain on employees who are already under heavy workloads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Awareness of employees\u2019 differing circumstances allows leaders to make thoughtful decisions\u2014for example, avoiding face-to-face team events when conditions do not support them, despite the emotional need for connection. This is not a time for unrealistic optimism, nor for learned helplessness. Technology offers alternative ways to foster connection in virtual environments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\"><span lang=\"en-US\">This awareness also applies to deadlines and performance expectations, including the conscious choice to avoid unnecessary perfectionism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Employees value <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>communication, communication, communication<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u2014transparent sharing of what is known and unknown, and clear information on where and how to access additional support tailored to individual needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>What do organisations expect from leaders?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\"><span lang=\"en-US\">At the same time, organisations expect from leaders what they always have\u2014but now amplified. Leaders increasingly feel caught in the middle. Organisations expect them to act faster, standardise best practices, reduce administration, eliminate unnecessary systems, and empower employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>How can leaders contribute to employee wellbeing?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>The time to rest is when you don\u2019t have time to rest.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Leadership competency frameworks vary slightly across authors, but most share common elements: emotional awareness, inclusion, clear definition of roles and responsibilities, and a focus on processes rather than solely on outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\"><span lang=\"en-US\">In practice, this means leaders should:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Prioritise their own health and wellbeing\u2014credibility matters<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Champion situational, transformational and visionary leadership in practice<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Build high-quality relationships that respect personal boundaries<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Support employee mental health proactively\u2014not only by participating in HR initiatives, but by identifying needs, co-creating solutions, and monitoring their impact<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"hr-HR\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The academic community has been mobilised\u2014not only in developing vaccines, but also in researching the effects this crisis has had on all of us.
